Accentuated Shoulders – Shoulder Pads Reinvented!

When you think of shoulder pads, I am sure you the first thing that comes to your mind are the old pinstriped ladies suits and oversized holiday sweaters from the ‘80s.  Fortunately, shoulder pads took a short sabbatical and are now better than ever!

Shoulder pads now come in a variety of shapes and sizes and are not just found in those old ‘80s suits.  They can be pointy and bold or smaller for a more lady like look.   Don’t get me wrong, you have to wear this trend properly to make it work.  If you do wear it right, though, the volume will make your top pop and your waist disappear.   Make sure the shoulder pads are in proportion to your body size.  If the pads are too big you may end up looking like Melanie Griffith in Working Girl circa 1988.  Now, if you already have broad shoulders, this trend may be a challenge and may not work for you, but you never know until you give it a chance.

Take your cue from the queen of standout shoulders, Rihanna.  The dramatic look makes her neck long and lean and her waist nonexistent, which gives her an even more dramatic hour glass shape.   When I tried to find a single photo of Rihanna rocking a broad shoulder, I could not pick just one!  She wears a shoulder pad oh so well and quite often.

See below to find ways to modernize this trend by wearing current accessories and other now items.  So broaden your horizon and your shoulders by giving this throwback trend a try!
