Literal prints were seen on the runways of some of the hottest designers at Fall Fashion Weeks this spring. Dolce & Gabbana showed their star struck prints in flowy and fitted dresses, tights and tops and even combined with some subtle sheet music. Givenchy’s bold, but subdued black panther pattern used to trim his pencil skirts and adorn his beautiful blouses were a show stopper.
But the runway is not the only place these types of prints are appropriate. A loud literal print can be worn anytime and for any situation. Wherever the print is placed on your body (shirt, skirt or other) this trend should be the centerpiece of your ensemble. Style with any solid (neutrals or bright vibrant colors will work) or even a small, all-over pattern. Never forget, you can pair different patterns! Try something similar to Givenchy’s black panther print and soften with polka dots or even D&G’s starry night design with simple stripes. Watch both full runway shows to see how the professionals mix and match the all sorts of prints, even extremely similar prints. This is great learning opportunity for anyone new to this trend!
Literally, prints can make you more fashion forward than you think! The most important thing to remember is powerful prints can be overpowering, so you’ve got to OWN IT!

East Coast Chic (ECC) began as a fashion blog in 2010. I created ECC because the diversity of style on the East Coast is inspirational and endless. ECC allows me to share my favorite fashion thoughts and spots from my headquarters in Washington, DC, as well as other trend setting states along the East Coast and beyond.
