2011 Fall Fashion Week has been going on since early January and I have finally made it through most of the shows to this point (multiple times). There is too much to say about all of the different runways, so I have narrowed it down to my top five so far. I wanted to share these picks with you, but remember, don’t limit your looking to just these shows. I will also tell you the best place to easily view all of the amazing Fashion Week runways:
ECC previously posted about Michael’s show which was simply amazing and worth mentioning again. Read Michael Kors celebrates 30 years of style at New York Fashion Week to learn more about the details of the show and how Michael is celebrating this major milestone in the fashion industry. Michael is everywhere even after fashion week as Gwyneth Paltrow wore an almost identical version of Michael’s final runway look to the Vanity Fair Oscar party earlier this week.
Carolina Herrera’s show was full of fitted female silhouettes with fur trimmings and velvet belts. While I loved everything about the show there were two reasons that made it one of my number ones. Her gloves and gowns. The unique neutral gloves folded up toward the wrists created an intriguing look with classic pant suits and skirts. They almost looked like chic flippers. All I can say is that I need a pair of my own. And the gowns were impeccable from long and short sleeves to strapless, fitted skirts with a flattering flair and a mix of structured solids and patterns. It was like Oscars on the runway with multiple red carpet worthy dresses.
The reason I loved this show – sweaters! The capes, dresses and ponchos in thick, heavy sweater fabric are cool and practical for everyday fall fashion almost anywhere. The combination of sweaters and fur in this show made for whimsical warm wear for the street or the ski lodge. Classic coats with a twist and patterned pants also played a prominent part in this show. Pringle of Scotland makes me want to start shopping for fall already and it is not even spring!
Clowns in Couture, what a concept! I hate clowns, love couture, but it somehow worked. Vivienne’s show was eye catching and overwhelming to me. One thing you can’t deny is that every piece that walked the runway was funky and fantastic whether layered to the max or simply worn single. From the socks to the sweaters to the feathers and more, words can’t describe and the show must be seen to believe.
Paul puts women in menswear with pinstripes, pleated pants, ties and vests. Women in menswear are like a wolf wearing a sheepskin coat. It is often unexpected while remaining alluring and always striking. Paul keeps the menswear loose, yet structured on women showing us form fitting isn’t always the sexiest way to wear this trend. Belts, coats and sweaters add pops of color and the appearance of chic handbags soften the masculine show. This look may have men questioning their sexuality when they feel the intense attraction to someone wearing a suit and tie, but in this day in age, menswear is for everyone.

East Coast Chic (ECC) began as a fashion blog in 2010. I created ECC because the diversity of style on the East Coast is inspirational and endless. ECC allows me to share my favorite fashion thoughts and spots from my headquarters in Washington, DC, as well as other trend setting states along the East Coast and beyond.
