In the Sunday, July 4th issue of the Washington Post Arts and Style section, Robin Givhan wrote Industry’s going Gaga, but flash may flame out.  In short the article discusses Lady Gaga’s style and whether, in this short time, she has become a fashion icon.   I agree with Robin when she simply says no, Lady Gaga is not an icon in the sense of the word.

A fashion icon has staying power.  They are someone that influences the masses to dress and look like them.  The individual is remembered for their style even past their days here on earth.  While Gaga is great at getting our attention, I know I will not be wearing the getups that she appears in on and off stage. The matter at hand is that she is a performer and she is brilliant at marketing herself.  I am a Gaga fan to the end and love to watch what she will do next, but it does take more than a out of control ensemble and her not always lady like antics to create an icon.

Robin mentions that because she wears pieces created by iconic designers, doesn’t necessarily make her an icon.  I agree, and I have to say just because a designer creates an outfit doesn’t mean it is an iconic look.  That is why we have best and worst dressed lists after every red carpet during awards season and that is why we have sale racks in stores.  Simply because something was manufactured by a famous, well-known designer does not always make it fashion forward and fabulous.  Designers also create avant-garde looks for the runway, which are often amazing, but not wearable for everyday life.  Lady Gaga does us a favor by taking these looks off the runway so the rest of the world can see, but most designers must also create wearable pieces to become an icon in the fashion world.  Fashion is art, but what good is it if it can not ever be worn and admired.

Lady Gaga is and will always be known for her outlandish attire and I appreciate the risks she takes, but I believe that it is too early to be throwing around the word icon. I do think that if Lady Gaga does have a unique casual style and if she is around for years to come, we may need to consider icon as a possibility.  I love the look and the music that Lady Gaga has created and will always be listening and watching to see what happens next, but for now you will only see me looking like Gaga on one night of the year, Halloween.
