Meg Ryan has played some iconic roles in many classic romantic movies including When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle, When a Man Loves a Woman and so many more. My all time favorite, though, You’ve Got Mail. Here Ryan plays children’s book store owner Kathleen Kelly. The character Kathleen Kelly is a content and kind person who loves and appreciates the simple things in life (butterflies in the subway, bouquets of sharpened pencils and daisies).
Kathleen Kelly’s wardrobe matched her personality. While some may call it plain, I call it classic casual with her crewneck tees and sweaters with khaki pants or her tights and turtlenecks under a sheath dress. All of Kathleen’s looks can be easily translated to today (more than 10 years later) with little to no change other than the cut of her khakis and the length of the dresses and skirts she wore. Other items that need no updating would be her chunky oversized sweaters (everything was oversized in the ‘90s and it was amazing) and the timeless basic white button-up tops and black outerwear.
This crisp and clean look makes for a wardrobe that will literally never, ever go out of style and will, in turn, save you money for years to come. So why not spend an afternoon doing some fashion research by watching the best romantic comedy and movie of all time, You’ve Got Mail, and taking some notes on how to recreate the chic style of Kathleen Kelly.
