Michelle Obama and I spent early last week in New York City. While our schedules may not have been the same, our wardrobe choices were closer than ever.
On Tuesday, February 8, Michelle made multiple appearances on morning shows like LIVE! with Regis & Kelly and the TODAY show wearing a flowing navy polka-dot dress from H&M that cost only $35. Michelle’s cheap chic ensemble not only shows us that fashion is affordable, but she also reminds us that the tailor is a woman’s best friend. Shopping off the rack often requires some alterations, whether that be simply bringing up the hem of a skirt or adding a major component to your piece, like adding sleeves to a sleeveless dress, which is exactly what Michelle did. Spending less on a piece allows you the option of spending slightly more to make the item fit perfectly (which should always be a priority) or transform it into something even more new to you.
Michelle’s accented her patterned dress with solid accessories including a thick red belt at the waist and yellow kitten heels. Her style is her own and she wears what looks good, which is the easiest fashion rule to follow. But Michelle in her H&M dress also reminds us that style is accessible to all.

East Coast Chic (ECC) began as a fashion blog in 2010. I created ECC because the diversity of style on the East Coast is inspirational and endless. ECC allows me to share my favorite fashion thoughts and spots from my headquarters in Washington, DC, as well as other trend setting states along the East Coast and beyond.
