Maxi dresses are all the rage right now. I especially love the basic cotton tee or tank maxis for casual summer days and nights. Unfortunately, for those of us who are vertically challenged, it is hard to find a maxi that is the right length. They often hang, at least on me, several inches long. I have a couple of super simple tips to make a maxi fit even us short sisters.
The first option is permanent so you’ve got to commit to make it work. Cotton is a lightweight fabric easy to cut. You’ll want to wash and dry before cutting in case the dress shrinks that first time. Then just cut to the length you want either straight across or even try a scalloped edge for some extra excitement. Heck, go crazy and try a zigzag! Because of the casual vibe of a cotton maxi a little fraying adds some character as well.
The other option takes us back to the early ‘90s. Remember knotting your tee years ago to make it shorter and create a better fit? Well, you can do the same with your dress! Make your maxi shorter by knotting at the bottom and off to the side. Try knotting not only your maxi dress, but maxi skirts as well. Why not make it a comeback throughout your wardrobe with your tops to.
I hope this helps you height defying females finally find that maxi you’ve been wanting, but never thought you could wear. These little tricks can make a big difference to the fit of a plain cotton maxi and adds style at the same time. Imagine with this Victoria’s Secret Maxi Tie-dye Dress for $69.50 (solid colors available for $59.50).

East Coast Chic (ECC) began as a fashion blog in 2010. I created ECC because the diversity of style on the East Coast is inspirational and endless. ECC allows me to share my favorite fashion thoughts and spots from my headquarters in Washington, DC, as well as other trend setting states along the East Coast and beyond.

I consider myself short even though I’m the average height (5’5″). I guess because everybody I hang out with are taller than me. Ah well. I love maxi dresses and I do have a problem with it be so long that it drags on the floor. Doesn’t help that I don’t care much for wearing heels. So, I will definitely try the ‘tying the bottom to a knot’ suggestion.
Meanwhile, it was great to meet you at Carbon last week. Your blog is nice.
Hey Vivi!! It was so nice to meet you at CARBON last week too!
You should def try the knot when you run into this problem, but I saw you rockin’ a wonderful white maxi in your White Heat post – http://www.heartprintandstyle.com/2011/07/white-heat.html. It was the perfect length and looked amazing!
Hope to see you soon!!
