When getting dressed, it is natural to put together an outfit that consists of a solid and some sort of pattern. In an earlier entry I asked readers to scan their closet contents and create several outfits by putting together patterned pieces. Well, another way to make your wardrobe instantly grow is by mixing your solids. I’m not talking a white shirt and black skirt. That combo is very expected (yet classic so don’t discount it completely, just don’t do it all the time).
Examine your closet yet again and look for tops and bottoms that are not neutrals. Make an ensemble by pairing two unexpected solids. Start with something simple. Colors from the same category usually go together, two primary or two pastels or two jewel tones (totally in this season). Another great combination is taking colors from the same family on the color wheel. Two shades of orange, two shades of purple, green, red, blue, yellow! The options are endless! Then start mixing these different concepts, like a jewel tone and a pastel and so on.
Once you’ve mastered the uniting of two solids, expand your ensembles further using three solid pieces. A bold skirt and cardigan with a pastel top. When mixing three solids it may be best to do two of the three colors from the same category (primary, pastel, etc). And if you are brave enough to try, do four (definitely not to much)!
You don’t have to be extreme to make a big statement. We live in a time where your clothing doesn’t have to match, they have to go. You’ll be amazed by the number of outfits you can produce with items you already have if you take the time to think it through.

East Coast Chic (ECC) began as a fashion blog in 2010. I created ECC because the diversity of style on the East Coast is inspirational and endless. ECC allows me to share my favorite fashion thoughts and spots from my headquarters in Washington, DC, as well as other trend setting states along the East Coast and beyond.
