On a recent trip to my favorite city (NYC), I found a mesh bib necklace at my favorite flea market (Hell’s Kitchen Flea Market). It was more than I would normally spend on costume jewelry, so I reluctantly passed up the piece. I have not been able to get the necklace out of my mind, so I began looking for it online and doing some research on the brand. What I found out made me want the mesh marvel even more.
This vintage mesh bib necklace comes from Whiting and Davis, a producer of metal mesh products used for things like decorative architectural designs, industrial uses like protective shark mesh suits and, of course, for fashion. Whiting and Davis also produced costume jewelry until the 1980’s. The brand is also known for its dainty mesh handbags and the material has been used by designers like Catharine Malandrino, Michael Kors and more.
The WD mesh bib necklace dates back to the 1970 and 80s. The toughest question you’ll have to ask yourself is what color (silver and gold are the most common). I just bought my necklace in silver and am looking forward to using the statement maker to jazz up my casual wear. I’m thinking a loose white tee and jeans (cut off shorts when summer roles around). This is a loud piece so you want to keep everything you wear with it super simple.
After doing my research, I realized the price asked at the flea market was a value for this vintage accessory. I was able to find one, however, near that same price online. I bought mine on eBay for $49 (plus shipping), which was worth it to me to own this vintage treasure. Decide what you are willing to pay for a standout accessory like this. I have seen the piece online starting around $50 and well into the $300 range. I found several of the necklaces for sale and if you are patient, you will be able to find an affordable one for you. Try starting with Google Shopping and websites like Etsy or eBay.
Whiting and Davis made other mesh accessories including a seductive mesh snake bracelet/choker and the adorable mesh tie necklace. These are funky pieces that will get you noticed no matter what. Distinctive accessories like these are important to have in your wardrobe to keep it exciting and never boring.
